The UC Balangay is a non-partisan, non-sectarian and non-profit student organisation that is established to introduce and promote the Philippines -its eclectic culture, rich tradition, and diverse ethnicity - among the members of the UC community and the larger Canterbury region. It operates based on two key principles, namely, synergetic co-existence and diverse inclusiveness. Therefore, the UC Balangay welcomes both Filipino and non-Filipino members regardless of their preferred ideological philosophies; religious and moral acquisitions; and sexual orientations. The organisation has four main objectives:
1. Introduce, promote and propagate Philippine culture, tradition and ethnicity through its Filipino-themed events.
2. Provide informal academic support and assistance to members through its free (albeit limited) tutorial services.
3. Promote the University of Canterbury to prospective Filipino students living in New Zealand and in the Philippines.
4. Release official statements on significant issues affecting the university and its general student population.
