The University of Canterbury’s Geography Society (GeogSoc) was created in 2006. Our aim is to connect students with the Department of Geography and interact with one another through academic and social events. We are a small club growing as we move forward every year.
2017 is going to be an exciting year for GEOGSOC! We are creating a focus centred around sustainability with an emphasis on academic support, social events, and interaction with the Geography Department and wider community interested in geography.
As a club we welcome members across all faculties. We endeavour to get involved in community projects and events as well as form connections with other clubs on campus.
We are based in Room 341 Geog-Psyc building; this is home to the ‘Geography Learning Space’. This space offers an environment where students can study, socialise, and interact with other students across all levels, including post-graduate students and even staff. It is important to us that geography students and members have a facility, and support network throughout their time at UC.
Quiz Nights: Previously done with people within Geography, we want to expand and have challenges with other Departments and even clubs! The staff of Geography will participate too which will make for a fun event!
Annual student/staff dinner: This is a great night out in Semester 2 for all involved. Students and staff from the Department have a great time interacting in a social environment.
Postgraduate evening: In the last few weeks of the semester, a postgraduate evening is held with people working in the field talking about their careers using Geography. The evening provides general course information, applying for postgraduate courses and careers in Geography.
First year meet and greet: A meet and greet evening will allow students to introduce themselves and make friends. Pizza and drink will be provided too to help feed your hungry stomach!
Exam revision: Stressed before exams? We can help! GeogSoc collaborates between tutors and lecturers to provide tutorials to help students prepare for exams. Run by students, we want to help you make exam prep easier.
