International Students and bus fares: Have your say

Kia ora koutou katoa!

I’m Greg Kiddney, the Christchurch Central Youth Representative in the ECAN (Canterbury Regional Council) Youth Ropu.

As an International Student of UC, I understand using the Metro Buses in Christchurch has helped me to get around the city! In fact, most International Students I know tend to use the bus a lot, and a huge part of us use them to move around! But I need your help on this issue.

ECAN has proposed a plan to change its bus fare. The proposed plans are either Free Bus Fares, a $1.20 Tertiary Student Flat Rate in all zones, or just a Student Discount from the normal bus fare price.

Pick which option is best to help get International Students moving while reducing congestion and pollution on Christchurch’s Road. Then, please submit your #fareasay at ecan.govt.nz/annualplan22

If you use the bus, submit your #faresay. If you haven’t used the bus in a while, I urge you to remember your experience when you had to use the bus in the past! Which fares would you prefer to pay if you used the bus before? If you never used the bus, think about your mates or people who needed to use the bus.

Every International Student should have their #faresay, as this will affect the future of incoming International Students and yourself if you’re planning to stay here in 2023.
