How to Waste an Hour on Campus
Got a lecture break and need some chill time? Here’s our best tips, from crafting and gardens to alternative radio!
Borrow a Bike
Did you know the UCSA runs a free bike hire service, Monday to Friday? Why not check one out and take it for a spin around campus? Find out more.
CANTA magazine
UC’s student media source since 1930.
It’s a must-read, full of biting satire, awkward dating stories and pieces that will make you think.
This free mag hits campus stands every fortnight during term. They’ve also gone all-out with their online content. Follow CANTA on Instagram, Facebook, or visit their website.
Free games at Haere-roa
Yip, we said FREE. Visit Haere-roa’s Social Space to have a crack at UCSA’s two arcade machines. 👾 They’re fun and stacked with the classics like Pac-Man, Frogger, and Donkey Kong.
Not keen on arcade? There’s also table tennis, fooz ball, and The Foundry has a pool table.
The Foundry’s weeknight rituals
Speaking of The Foundry, there’s always something on at the UCSA’s bar! Our favourite’s the Quiz Night on Tuesdays, but they also have great live music on Fridays.
Follow them on Facebook and check out their webpage.
Te Rua Makerspace
This cool little gem in Puaka-James Hight is where you can create, craft and dream. Head over to learn something new, work on your own fun project, or even co-host an event.
Our highlight is definitely the 3D printer.
UC’s Community Gardens
If you’re looking for a moment of peace, look no further than UC’s gardens. These stunning spots are places where you can volunteer, meet new people, and take away some fresh produce. They even do cosy mini-events like their upcoming movie night. Cute!

RDU 98.5FM
This local student radio station calls itself the only bastion of alternative radio in Christchurch. Get rid of your television and visit www.rdu.org.nz instead.
