New UC Rec Centre Construction Begins at Kirkwood Fields

Construction is officially underway for the University of Canterbury’s new Recreation Centre, set to significantly enhance student life on campus.

Student President Luc McKay visited the future site at Kirkwood Fields to share the exciting update. “This site will be the location of the new UC Rec Centre, with construction starting this year,” McKay announced.

Stage One of the project is already complete, and Stage Two will begin from June 23 to June 25, running daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This next phase involves low penetration testing, a quiet and low-vibration method used for ground investigation which will have no impact to student's studies.

“This is a huge win for students,” McKay said. “We know the old Rec Centre was getting pretty old and tired.”

Project Manager Dave, who is overseeing the development, joined McKay on-site to provide further details. “We’re currently targeting August 2027 for practical completion and handover of the new Rec Centre,” he said.

Students can look forward to a brand-new two-storey facility, spanning 540 square metres, and featuring a new artificial sports pitch. “It’s a modern sports facility designed by Rec & Sport, specifically for students,” Dave added.

McKay emphasized the positive impact this development will have: “We’re super excited about the new Rec Centre. We know it’s going to make a real difference to the student experience at UC.”

Further updates on the construction timeline and progress will be shared as the project moves forward.
