2nd Year accounting & finance student passionate about many things and focus in life.
UC GoldSoc is a new club here on campus; we aim to educate students about recreational gold panning and the fun that it can bring. We want to create an awesome community. This hobby can have the assumption, just like other recreational activities, of being male-dominated, so we also want to get many women involved! That this can be enjoyed by females also when it comes to outdoor recreation.
We claim that GoldSoc is the very 1st Student club in NZ to explicitly say it's a gold mining club! We are quite frankly saying the quiet part out loud and not being afraid to show our boldness to this awesome, most epic recreational hobby. It is on par with hunting, fishing, tramping, hiking, skiing, adventuring, and climbing. The kind of students we expect to be interested in this club can range from Engineering students in civil, electrical, chemical, Geology & Science students to Accounting & Finance students!
- Our goals for GoldSoc are aiming to get sponsorships, ideally, one from Oceana Gold would be a milestone we can achieve.
- Establish our Club as significant as the other large clubs, "the David amongst Giants."
- Get Santana Minerals to UC for an historic Presentation of the Bendigo-Ophir Rise & Shine $14 Billion gold deposits
- Hit Central Otago, 12 Mile Creek, Arrowtown, the West Coast's Shamrock creek + also mine a private claim
- Shake up the UC Clubs with GoldSoc on the Richterscale & gain 1000 members
- Become the Dominant Supreme New Club
It has been hard trying to start a new club from scratch, we believe anything is possible if we believe it is, can do anything! The main takeaway we want to educate students about is that gold panning is the fun that comes from working together, having fun, a few drinks after, the excitement & gold fever of finding your 1st gold nugget, and learning patience for when you find nothing.
We actually are serious about this club, it is not a joke, and is a real hobby that has its rewards and risks, so our members need to respect it, respect the outdoors, and the dangers that are possible. We have to know about the safety hazards, which can include personal injuries, flash flooding, and getting lost in remote areas, etc., and many more that we can work through in our workshops at the Trading Room Meremere Fridays 4pm to 5pm.
Geology students who study mineralisation will respect this club a lot since they will mostly know where the gold is hiding and will be good to use nature's cheat sheet!
GoldSoc has 2 Branches, the 1st is the actual fun part, being out in the West Coast or Central Otago camping, and the 2nd is the Investment side. My plan for GoldSoc is to keep its roots planted for well long after I leave the university so others can continue the dream!
